Our Founders
Arizona Gifted Academy began not as a business plan, but as a conversation among parents in the greater Phoenix area who care deeply about meaningful, high-quality education for our children. A small group of families—physicians, attorneys, engineers, entrepreneurs, nurses, and a former classroom teacher turned gifted education consultant—kept finding one another through a shared experience: our children were naturally curious, intellectually advanced, and local schools could not meet their unique needs. Many of us ultimately turned to homeschooling because we could not find programs that offered the intellectual depth, flexibility, and curiosity-driven learning our children required.
From an early age, our children displayed remarkable curiosity, each in their own way, yet with striking commonalities. As toddlers, they asked complex questions, made unexpected connections, and pursued interests with unusual intensity. When it came time for preschool and kindergarten, each family realized how difficult it was to find environments that could nurture our bright children in meaningful ways. Some of us pursued psychological testing and learned that our children displayed exceptionally high intellectual ability, and gained insight into the asynchronous development typical of many highly gifted learners.
Some families enrolled their children in well-known charter schools recognized for strong academic outcomes, only to find that the performance-driven culture left our children feeling pressured and disengaged rather than inspired. Others explored rigorous private schools, seeking deeper intellectual engagement, but discovered that highly structured curricula and competitive environments often limited the freedom our children needed to explore ideas with depth and creativity.
In search of better options, we began studying the research on gifted learners. The findings are clear: highly gifted children are often internally motivated, and to thrive, they need depth, complexity, acceleration, intellectual peers, and environments that allow for thoughtful focus. They also benefit from educators who understand asynchronous development, the uneven pace at which gifted children grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Our children have tremendous potential to contribute meaningfully to the world, yet many also benefit from intentional development of executive function skills and a strengths-based approach that nurtures both their abilities and their needs.
One of our founders, a former classroom teacher turned education consultant, traveled across the country visiting schools designed specifically for gifted learners. After studying innovative programs in major cities and examining their educational models, she pursued a master’s degree in Gifted Education to bring that level of expertise and thoughtful design back to Arizona.
These conversations, experiences, and years of searching ultimately led to the creation of Arizona Gifted Academy. Together, we set out to build the kind of school we wished had existed for our own children: a place where intellectual curiosity is celebrated, deep thinking is encouraged, and gifted learners can grow academically, socially, and personally.
Arizona Gifted Academy reflects the shared vision of families who believe that gifted children deserve an education as thoughtful, dynamic, and expansive as the way they think.
Advisors and Educational Guidance
Arizona Gifted Academy consults with experts in gifted education and related fields, including specialists in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as psychologists who focus on the development and well-being of gifted children. These advisors provide guidance on curriculum, program design, and learning environments, helping ensure that our approach reflects evolving research and best practices.
Our academic philosophy is informed by the work and guidance of leading organizations in the field, including the Davidson Institute for Talent Development and the National Association for Gifted Children. Drawing from their research and frameworks ensures that our program aligns with the current understanding of how highly gifted learners think, learn, and develop.
Through ongoing consultation and reflection, we cultivate a learning community that combines intellectual rigor, curiosity-driven exploration, and the social-emotional support gifted students need to flourish.
